Third Generation8. John Thomas JOHNSON; F(Leroy W, Johnson) was born in Sep 1855 in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois. He died ca 1935. His father was born in Kentucky
A son lawrence (sp) may be missing? Or it may be one of the males middle name. The father and mother came from KY. ....Or may be the previous marriage others think so?
He may have been known as ("Johnnie" born 1854 in Carroll Co., Arkansas)?

1. Born-1900 Census of Winona Twp.,Carroll Co., Ark., P 270 B, #51/54, ED 45 It says he was 44 on his the 14th of Sep. And the middle name looks like a F instead of a T. They live next door on both sides to the Pinkleys (Mary Harp Married into this family. She is the sister to Arrena)
Sheet 3 (GS1240052) Cl (2 lines)
2. Interviews with Harrison Eugene Johnson (have letters) One old story grandfather told; was of his father;  that John, Thomas (F) John T. or F was there when Joseph Smith the Profit of the LDS church was murdered and was appalled at the unjustice that went on at this time. He said, " JOE- Joseph Smith did nothing wrong. (Have this valuable letter of the family and other letters from this G-Grand Dad, OF Eugene Johnson)
3. He may have been born in Carrol, AR instead of IL.
4. They moved to OK and then to Phoenix AZ. says CARROL COUNTY FAMILIES; "THESE WERE THE FIRST", Carroll County, Arkansas 1991 (1833 compiled by Jim Lair.
S.L.City Utah Family History Library. 976.717 D3L. "John T. Johnson, moved into Oklahoma and, then on to Phoenix, AR."
5. *Marr. License is under John "F." Johnson and Arvena Harp (v-r, Mistakes), Carroll Co., Arkansas. 3 Jul 1886. Not Irene as someone gave the wrong name at the time of death to be forever on his death certificate.
DEATH DATE 1935 (AGE 80) not proven this is not correct. He was older, they may have another Johnson?
6. Proven: The marriage licenses under the name of John F. Johnson of Winona, Carroll Co., AR. His age was 28 (1858).
7. His wife is Miss "Arvena" Harp of Winona, Carroll Co., AR. Her age is 26 (1860) Pge 83, Vol C marriage record book, Berryville, Carroll Co., AR. This record was read by Shirley Doss and she may not have transcribe the letters in their names correctly. However, no one spell correctly in those days.

John married Arrena, Arena, Rene HARP daughter of Louis, Lewis Thomas HARP Sr and Nancy Marie Vaughan STONE on 3 Jul 1886 in Berryville, Carroll Co., Arkansas.

Wife: Arrena,Arena, was born on 14 Oct 1858 in , Carroll, Arkansas. She died in Nov 1928 in , , Oklahoma. *The Nancy M. Vaughan Stone line is a major prob. it may go in a circle because of incise nature...
DEATH DATE NOV 1928 (AGE 70)
On death certificate of H E Johnson the mother's name is under Irene harp. He didn't get it correct, It was Arrena.
Some say this may be a second marriage? (doubt it) This file says she was born 15 Nov. 1858 not 14 Oct 1858. Never heard of this marriage but, Grand dad was a very private, quiet person, and never reveled much.
1880 census says Arrena was born in 1860 and the 1900 census in Arkansas records says Arrena was born October 1958 (age 42). They have been married 14 years. In 1900 it show only 3 children Eugene, Laura, and James W.? Her sister Mary lives next door to a relative "Pinkley".
Book, S.L. City, Utah Family Hist. Center, 1998; CARROLL COUNTY FAMILIES: THESE WERE THE
FIRST CARROLL COUNTY, ARKANSAS 1991 compiled by Jim Lair (Lib. #976.717 D3L). Synapse of the Harp family members and some of the photo's are in this book.
This book spelled her name as Ariena? and also stated she was born on Nov. 15 1858. And also they moved to OK and then on to Phoenix, AR.
Note 15 Nov 1858?
John and Arrena, Arena, had the following children:
+ 9 M i. Eugene, Jean, Harrison JOHNSON was born on 29 May 1890. He died on 13 Feb 1976.
+ 10 F ii. Laura Malinda JOHNSON was born in Jun 1891. She died .

GENEALOGY OF MALINDA MOLLY VAUGHAN STONE

Descendants of Malinda Vaughan (More clues to further investigations)
Generation No. 1
1. MALINDA VAUGHAN (WILLIAM PATRICK2 VAUGHAN, UNKNOWN1) was born Abt. 1813 in Tennessee, and died September 1898 in Arkansas. She married (1) WILLIAM VAUGHAN. She married (2) SOLOMON STONE Abt. 1834 in Marion County, Tennessee? He was born in Kentucky.
Notes for MALINDA VAUGHAN
It is not known who Malinda "Molly" Vaughan's parents were or exactly when she was born, she has been placed in the family of William and Fereby and though there was some sort of connection to them, just how she was related is unknown. She may have even been a much younger sister or a niece of William Vaughan. She was listed as a boarder in the household of her son-in-law and daughter, Louis and Nancy Harp in the 1880 census of Carroll County, Arkansas.
From a letter to Cora P. Call from "Agnes": "Her (Nancy's) mother's name was Malinda ________ Vaughan. In the Harp Bible it only gives her name and the month she died in, which was in Sept."
Her great granddaughter, Cora P. Call claimed that Malinda "Molly" lived to be 103 years old and died when Cora was 6 years old.
She also claimed that Molly was 1/2 Cherokee and loved to talk about the "Bursk" or Green Corn Dance. This was from Cora's book, "Indian Religion".
Notes for WILLIAM VAUGHAN:
It is unknown who this William was, the data came from a letter from Mila Hull Ender to Cora Pinkley Call of June 9th, 1964. We don't know who Ms. Ender meant. Hopefully she didn't mean that this William was the same as Malinda's father or grandfather and that her daughter Nancy was born after an incestuous affair.
Notes for SOLOMON STONE:
He was in Taney County, Missouri in 1850.

Child of MALINDA and WILLIAM VAUGHAN is:
2. i. NANCY MARIE4 VAUGHAN, b. April 13, 1828, Union or Williamson County, Tennessee; d. September 30, 1908, Carroll County, Arkansas.
Child of MALINDA and SOLOMON STONE is:

Notes for LITTLE BERRY STONE:
Apparently served in the Civil War, from a letter written to Cora P. Call from Agnus Hull on Oct. 14, 1965.
"We have some war records of Little Berry Stone."
Another letter by Agnes Hull says that Little was discharged on August 23, 1865 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, this is from his discharge papers.

2. NANCY MARIE4 VAUGHAN (MALINDA VAUGHAN WILLIAM PATRICK 2 VAUGHAN, UNKNOWN 1) was born April 13, 1828 in Union or Williamson County, Tennessee, and died September 30, 1908 in Carroll County, Arkansas. She married LEWIS "TOM" HARP March 02, 1845 in Washington County, Arkansas, son of JOHN HARP and LOUISE VAUGHAN. He was born December 28, 1826 in Warren County, Tennessee, and died June 24, 1887 in Madison County, Arkansas.
Notes for NANCY MARIE VAUGHAN:
Nancy (Vaughan) Harp's obituary, from the North Arkansas Star newspaper:

"At Rest.
"Again the death messenger has visited our midst and this time has
carried away one of the old land marks of the country. Grandma Harp (or
grandma as she was more frequently called) departed this life on the
morning of September the 30th and entered the 'home not made with
hands.' Although having attained the ripe old age of eighty years,
grandma performed much of the work for a family of eight with her own
hands having assumed the responsibility by keeping a home for her son
and six motherless children since the death of a daughter-in-law two
years ago. On the day preceding her death she went about her work as
usual and was very cheerful. She retired to rest as usual. Her son
heard her speak to one of her grandsons at two o'clock at which time she
was all right but on arising at the usual hour life had become extinct;
she seemed to have just crossed over the tide.

"We do not mourn for her as one whose life has been broken but as one
whose life was fully golden for the harvest, as one having lived a long
life full of good deeds. Grandma was a member of the Christian church
and was always in her place unless sickness or some such cause kept her
away. She was left a widow twenty years ago. Her mother lived with
her until her death eleven years ago, she having lived to the age of one
hundred and three years.

"Grandma was the mother of ten children and at the time of her death
lived in calling distance of the fifth generation. She leaves six
children and three grand children, 70 great grand children and three
great great grand children. May the loving Father comfort the sorrowing
and heal all the broken hearts, and may His especial blessing overshadow
this family who has been the second time bereft, and may her long,
useful life be helpful to us that we too may enter into the joy of our
Lord.
"We laid her by the side of her husband at Rock House cemetery....
under the name; "Mrs. J. W. Hull." -- Oct. 16, 1908, pg. 4, Col. 3

MARY FRANCIS HENDERSON, VAUGHANS

A page was copied about the settlers of Taney County. One was of Mary Francis Henderson, who married George Washington "Uncle Bud" Vaughan in Barry County, Missouri. She was said to have been born in the town of Roaring River, this no longer exists. Family stories say her mother (name never given) was 1/2 Cherokee and was on the Trail of Tears. As Barry County borders Taney one wonders if her mother might have been one of these Cherokee women. I think Mary's parents were Thomas Henderson and Nancy ____. Nancy would have been the 1/2 Cherokee woman. The 1850 census shows her being born in North Carolina. Thomas was shown as born in Tennessee. They lived in Searcy County, Arkansas in 1850, Tomahawk Township. In 1860 they lived in Stone County, Missouri, but suspecting, between these two censuses they lived in Barry County. B"Within My Ozark Valley". Has any one seen this bk.? William Vaughan, an adventurer from Wales (descendant of Thomas & Henry Vaughan) became a Indian trader. William Vaughan married a Cherokee maiden by the name of Fair-A- Bee-Lunah in the Cherokee Territory of Tennessee. Willian Vaughan and his son-in-law Philip Harp. They were in Eureka Springs, Ark. The great grandmother was Stone. Granny Molly Vaughan Stone, 1892. It speaks of the Civil War.
The Vaughans & Harps have left a string of such houses to blaze the trail which they open all the way from Tennessee into the Ozarks. The towns spoken of were Cassville,, Mo.. Springfield, Mo. (Dr. Benjamin Franklin Pickley), Ft. Smith (then called Belle Point) Boston Mountains, Eureka Springs, Carrol, Madison and Newton Co., Ark. The more agricultural- minded Vaughans remained in Washington Co., Ark., where Samuel Vaughan, son of William, was one of the three commissioners who chose the site of Fayetteville, Ark. and helped survey it. He named the town for his home town, Fayetteville, Tenn. One can undestand the different spelling of Vaughan or Vaughn. Harps vs Erps, Earps. This book was written by CORA PINKLEY CALL, 1956. Many question some of the correctness of issues in the book. So do check everything out by other sources. .................................
Subject: Samuel and Daniel Vaughan

They lived around the Hawkins and Hancock Counties area -- there wasn't a Hancock County when they left Hawkins sometime after 1812, but just where they lived is still being debated. Most feel it was somewhere else in Tennessee, and very likely it was Warren and White Counties, Tennessee. There are grants in both counties for a Samuel and Daniel Vaughan and some indication that their sister Mary and her husband lived there:

Daniel: In Warren County, Tennessee in 1812, on a tax list, appears the name Daniel Vaughan, along with a David Vaughan. He apparently received land in White County, Tennessee, Grant # 5585 as an assignee of John C. McLemore, 3 acres lying in White County in the third District of Cane Creek of main Caney Fork including the house and improvements formerly occupied by John Medkiff, on May 23, 1814. In Deed Book F., page 73, he sold to John Simmons, both of White County, for $215, the land mentioned in the grant, on September 18, 1815. He appeared on the White County tax lists for 1815 and 1816.

Samuel: In Warren County, Tennessee, Grant # 5670, State of Tennessee to Samuel Vaughn, assignee of Peter Turney, 20 acres lying Warren County in the third District on the waters of Rocky River, June 4, 1814. Is this our Samuel?? Mary: Taken from her NOTES section: RECORDS ON VAUGHAN CONNECTION: On a Evans family reunion a few years back, and someone who attended gave a copy of the records that were circulated that day, and sent it to me, and it shows the following data:

MARY VAUGHAN, daughter of WILLIAM VAUGHAN, born 1779, Virginia. MARY VAUGHAN married JAMES EVANS - September 14, 1802, Hawkins County,Tennessee (Mary stated she was married in the home of her father, WILLIAM VAUGHAN) Their first son, JESSE EVANS, was born in 1803, Hawkins County,Tennessee, and Jesse's fifth child FERIBY EVANS was born in 1840. James Evans was listed near William Vaughan, Sr., John Vaughan, and William Vaughan, Jr. on the 1812 Tax Lists of Hawkins County,Tennessee. All appeared on the list taken by Wm. Nichols.

After his discharge from the War of 1812, James and Mary (Vaughan) Evans moved to White County, Tennessee, with her parents, where in 1816, James Evans witnessed an Indenture for WILLIAM VAUGHAN. James Evans died on 28 July 1820, in Fentress County, Tennessee, and hiswidow MARY EVANS continued on the Census of White and Van Burencounties, Tennessee. The Evans' were back and forth between what are now Van Buren (formerly White) and Fentress counties, TN. Mary died inAugust of 1873, Fentress County, Tennessee.

Note: Here is the note from Freddie Todd about Benjamin & Cherubia living with the Andersons. It doesn't specifically say Isaac & Jane Anderson, but theyare the only old Anderson couple it could have been. It isn't dated, but it's his (Freddie's) handwriting. Grandpap is what Freddie always called Benjamin Vaughan.
"Ben, Cherubia and two more elderly people by the name of Anderson lived together in the house on the little creek. I have heard old timers tell it. Said Grandpap kept goats. When he would come home, you could hear him call out, "come, Grandpap is home". The goats would come out of the hills and over the rail fence."
Another note: "Lewis Vaughan stated Benjamin Vaughan was not a extensive land owner like
the rest of the Vaughans. He should take a second look at Grandpap's land holdings. Mickey Vaughan states Ben Vaughan bought 160 acres of land from his Uncle Daniel Vaughan before he moved to Huntsville - the beginning of his political career."
"Evidently Ben like the Clifty area better. Here he established his home. Owned some of the better valley farm which makes up the War Eagle Basin. Here he raised his children and grandchildren. Here was the village of Clifty, a flourishing village with a drug store, a harness shop, three or four general stores, hardware store, three doctors, post office, hotel, stables, and mill, and later a canning factory."
--- From Peggy Hermann 1-15-2001

This story taken from "Clifty and the Two Hillbilly Kids Growin' Old" by Fred Todd.
p. 4 - "Grandpap (Benjamin) Vaughan lived southwest of the little village of Clifty. He said he was plowing corn one day and heard a pig squealing down toward the spring. He decided to go down and see what the trouble was. Harness in those days was called plough gears. It consisted of harness chains, back band lines, and collars. He said he unfastened the hame string, taken the collar off, and laid them on the plow. He got on the old mare, and he and his old hound went to see what was going on. As theywere going down the path or trail toward the spring, a panther jumped out of a tree. It had the pig up in the tree eating it alive! The panther landed on the old mare right behind him! As you might guess, right then and there the old mare shedded Grandpap and the panther! The old hound ran away, leaving Grandpap and the panther in the trail. Grandpap said he was afraid to run, so he confronted the vicious animal. He said it would growl with it's ears laid back like it was going to jump on him. When it growled, he would growl

(2) Carol, Vaughan Roots list, Item from the Vaughan Pioneer Book: "In his account of an interview on October 1923 with John Quincy Vaughan in Eugene, Oregon-an interview familiar to most Oregon Vaughans -- Fred Lockley described John Quincy as looking like a man who had stepped out of the age of the pack train and stage coach. He was heavy-set, broad-shouldered, and massively built. His beard was white, as was also his hair. He had on a broad-brimmed felt hat, and the look of wide spaces was in his eyes."

JOHN Q. VAUGHAN - "In 1863 John Q. Vaughan bought his present property which consists of one hundred and seventeen acres located in theneighborhood of Coburg, Lane County, and since that time he has been energetically engaged at its improvement and cultivation, eighty acres of whi ch are cultivated.
"He was born in Missouri, January 30, 1840, and came to Oregon in 1847 in company with his parents, who were seeking a home among the broader opportunities of the western states. He remained with his father until 1831, when he went to the mines in the hope of finding fortune which awaited the miner. He continued in the same mines for a year, and in 1861 he went to Idaho, still confident of his ability to succeed, and time justified the faith in himself, for after a winter spent in the neighborhood of Salmon river, during which he experienced hardships an dprivations which proved his courage, he returned to Oregon with $6,000 as the result of his persevering work. January, 1862 found him once more located on the home place, and there he remained until 1870, when he married and went to the farm which he had purchased seven years earlier.
"The wife of Mr.Vaughan was formerly Miss Flora Canterbury, and she died in 1895, the mother of four children, of whom Wilbur is located in Coburg; Oma it the wife of L. P Protzman; Euli a is the wife of A. C. Wheeler; Strahan St. Clair, who is engaged in agricultural pursuits with Mr. Vaughan.
