The good news is that I do have information on this Harp family.
Basically I believe Walter Harp is descended from Thomas Sr. & Abigail
Harp. Thomas was b. ca 1787 NC (1850 census), d. bet 1850 & 1860 census
prob. in Madison Co, AR. He made the same moves as the other Harps and I
believe he was possibly a brother or cousin of John Harp. He was listed
on the 1812 Warren Co, TN Tax List, and is mentioned in plat records there
in 1825 & 1826. He is on the 1830 Warren Co, Tn census and the 1832
Warren Co, TN Tax List. He went to Washington Co, AR by the 1836 Tax List and possibly was there earlier as his youngest daughter lists her birth as
ca 1833 in AR. Madison Co, AR was created out of Washington Co, AR in 1836 and so he is listed in Madison Co, AR thereafter - 1837 & 1838 Madison Co,
AR Tax Lists; in 1839 purchased land in NE, SW, Sec 3, Twp 18, Rng 26 of
Madison Co. He is on the 1840 & 1850 Madison Co, AR census record and is on Madison Co. Tax lists up through 1856.

From census records, I have the following children:

1. Sarah Harp b. ca 1815 m. Abner Bohannon (The death certificate of
their son, John Bohannon, listed his parents as Abner Bohannon & Harp)

2. unknown female Harp b. ca 1815-1820

3. unknown female Harp b. ca 1815-1820

4. Henry Harp b. ca 1822 TN

5. Agnes Harp b. ca 1824 TN

6. Thomas Harp Jr. b. ca 1825, m. ca 1844 to Martha J. McGinnis b. ca
1826 IL

7. Jane Harp b. ca 1827 TN

8. Hardy Harp b. ca 1830 TN d. 13 Sep 1870 (Pension records) m. Juda
McCarver b. 9 Mar 1832 TN, d. 11 Jun 1914 Madison Co, AR

9. Ruth O Harp b. 1833 AR m. N. M. Wahlquist

One of the unknown daughters above could be Phebe Harp ? who is mentioned in Union United Baptist Church records with Thomas & Abigail in 1841.

6. Thomas Harp Jr. b. ca 1825 is listed as Thomas Harper on the 1850
Madison Co, AR census. He is on various Tax lists and land records in
Madison County. In 1860 he is on the Washington Co, AR census. Children
of Thomas Harp Jr. & Martha McGinnis:

1. William Alexander Harp b. 23 Jun 1845 (pension record) or 23 Jun 1840
(death certificate) or 1841 (Cemetery marker in Madison Co), d. 13 May

Rockhouse Cemetery near where he had resided most of his life. The
funeral was held under direction of the Masonic Fraternity and was
directed by Bruce Brashears, undertaker of Huntsville. Mr. Harp was the
father of thirteen children, nine of whom survive him.

Walter Edward Harp was b. 28 Apr 1895 (father's pension), or 28 Apr 1894

I hope this helps your friend. I have much more I could send, but this is
an overview.
Walter E. Harp b. 5 Aug 1896 in Arkansas, married Mable Hughes, 8 Sept 1915, in Chaplin, Madison, Arkansas. He died Oct 1976 in Stephens

Walter is found with his parents in the 1910 census in Clifty,
Carroll, Arkansas. Parents are W. A. Harp (64 b. Arkansas) and Matilda
(45 b. Missouri): children are Nelson 18, Walter 16, Silas 11 and
Flora 8. Family in 1900 census in Omega, Carrol, Arkansas.

MARY FRANCIS HENDERSON, VAUGHANS

A page was copied about the settlers of Taney County. One was of Mary Francis Henderson, who married George Washington "Uncle Bud" Vaughan in Barry County, Missouri. She was said to have been born in the town of Roaring River, this no longer exists. Family stories say her mother (name never given) was 1/2 Cherokee and was on the Trail of Tears. As Barry County borders Taney one wonders if her mother might have been one of these Cherokee women. I think Mary's parents were Thomas Henderson and Nancy ____. Nancy would have been the 1/2 Cherokee woman. The 1850 census shows her being born in North Carolina. Thomas was shown as born in Tennessee. They lived in Searcy County, Arkansas in 1850, Tomahawk Township. In 1860 they lived in Stone County, Missouri, but suspecting, between these two censuses they lived in Barry County. B"Within My Ozark Valley". Has any one seen this bk.? William Vaughan, an adventurer from Wales (descendant of Thomas & Henry Vaughan) became a Indian trader. William Vaughan married a Cherokee maiden by the name of Fair-A- Bee-Lunah in the Cherokee Territory of Tennessee. Willian Vaughan and his son-in-law Philip Harp. They were in Eureka Springs, Ark. The great grandmother was Stone. Granny Molly Vaughan Stone, 1892. It speaks of the Civil War.
The Vaughans & Harps have left a string of such houses to blaze the trail which they open all the way from Tennessee into the Ozarks. The towns spoken of were Cassville,, Mo.. Springfield, Mo. (Dr. Benjamin Franklin Pickley), Ft. Smith (then called Belle Point) Boston Mountains, Eureka Springs, Carrol, Madison and Newton Co., Ark. The more agricultural- minded Vaughans remained in Washington Co., Ark., where Samuel Vaughan, son of William, was one of the three commissioners who chose the site of Fayetteville, Ark. and helped survey it. He named the town for his home town, Fayetteville, Tenn. One can undestand the different spelling of Vaughan or Vaughn. Harps vs Erps, Earps. This book was written by CORA PINKLEY CALL, 1956. Many question some of the correctness of issues in the book. So do check everything out by other sources. .................................
Subject: Samuel and Daniel Vaughan

They lived around the Hawkins and Hancock Counties area -- there wasn't a Hancock County when they left Hawkins sometime after 1812, but just where they lived is still being debated. Most feel it was somewhere else in Tennessee, and very likely it was Warren and White Counties, Tennessee. There are grants in both counties for a Samuel and Daniel Vaughan and some indication that their sister Mary and her husband lived there:

Daniel: In Warren County, Tennessee in 1812, on a tax list, appears the name Daniel Vaughan, along with a David Vaughan. He apparently received land in White County, Tennessee, Grant # 5585 as an assignee of John C. McLemore, 3 acres lying in White County in the third District of Cane Creek of main Caney Fork including the house and improvements formerly occupied by John Medkiff, on May 23, 1814. In Deed Book F., page 73, he sold to John Simmons, both of White County, for $215, the land mentioned in the grant, on September 18, 1815. He appeared on the White County tax lists for 1815 and 1816.

Samuel: In Warren County, Tennessee, Grant # 5670, State of Tennessee to Samuel Vaughn, assignee of Peter Turney, 20 acres lying Warren County in the third District on the waters of Rocky River, June 4, 1814. Is this our Samuel?? Mary: Taken from her NOTES section: RECORDS ON VAUGHAN CONNECTION: On a Evans family reunion a few years back, and someone who attended gave a copy of the records that were circulated that day, and sent it to me, and it shows the following data:

MARY VAUGHAN, daughter of WILLIAM VAUGHAN, born 1779, Virginia. MARY VAUGHAN married JAMES EVANS - September 14, 1802, Hawkins County,Tennessee (Mary stated she was married in the home of her father, WILLIAM VAUGHAN) Their first son, JESSE EVANS, was born in 1803, Hawkins County,Tennessee, and Jesse's fifth child FERIBY EVANS was born in 1840. James Evans was listed near William Vaughan, Sr., John Vaughan, and William Vaughan, Jr. on the 1812 Tax Lists of Hawkins County,Tennessee. All appeared on the list taken by Wm. Nichols.

After his discharge from the War of 1812, James and Mary (Vaughan) Evans moved to White County, Tennessee, with her parents, where in 1816, James Evans witnessed an Indenture for WILLIAM VAUGHAN. James Evans died on 28 July 1820, in Fentress County, Tennessee, and hiswidow MARY EVANS continued on the Census of White and Van Burencounties, Tennessee. The Evans' were back and forth between what are now Van Buren (formerly White) and Fentress counties, TN. Mary died inAugust of 1873, Fentress County, Tennessee.

William, Rebecca Smith Vaughan

This involves the family of William & Rebecca (Smith) Vaughan - William being brother or half-brother of Benjamin Vaughan who married Cherubia Harp. Some of the connections did not have included in Vaughan's database, so maybe it will be new information for everyone.
Found William & Rebecca on the 1850 Madison Co, AR census and then on the 1860 Franklin Co, AR census. Also, at least one Vaughan cousin was a descendant through William & Rebecca's son, James Randolph Vaughan..... These are the census records I found: (quoted)

It's probably this same William Vaughan, but I didn't make any notes about it. Does anyone know about this book, or have access to it? (This is all quoted, unknown source)

Note: Here is the note from Freddie Todd about Benjamin & Cherubia living with the Andersons. It doesn't specifically say Isaac & Jane Anderson, but theyare the only old Anderson couple it could have been. It isn't dated, but it's his (Freddie's) handwriting. Grandpap is what Freddie always called Benjamin Vaughan.
"Ben, Cherubia and two more elderly people by the name of Anderson lived together in the house on the little creek. I have heard old timers tell it. Said Grandpap kept goats. When he would come home, you could hear him call out, "come, Grandpap is home". The goats would come out of the hills and over the rail fence."
Another note: "Lewis Vaughan stated Benjamin Vaughan was not a extensive land owner like
the rest of the Vaughans. He should take a second look at Grandpap's land holdings. Mickey Vaughan states Ben Vaughan bought 160 acres of land from his Uncle Daniel Vaughan before he moved to Huntsville - the beginning of his political career."
"Evidently Ben like the Clifty area better. Here he established his home. Owned some of the better valley farm which makes up the War Eagle Basin. Here he raised his children and grandchildren. Here was the village of Clifty, a flourishing village with a drug store, a harness shop, three or four general stores, hardware store, three doctors, post office, hotel, stables, and mill, and later a canning factory."

This story taken from "Clifty and the Two Hillbilly Kids Growin' Old" by Fred Todd.
p. 4 - "Grandpap (Benjamin) Vaughan lived southwest of the little village of Clifty. He said he was plowing corn one day and heard a pig squealing down toward the spring. He decided to go down and see what the trouble was. Harness in those days was called plough gears. It consisted of harness chains, back band lines, and collars. He said he unfastened the hame string, taken the collar off, and laid them on the plow. He got on the old mare, and he and his old hound went to see what was going on. As theywere going down the path or trail toward the spring, a panther jumped out of a tree. It had the pig up in the tree eating it alive! The panther landed on the old mare right behind him! As you might guess, right then and there the old mare shedded Grandpap and the panther! The old hound ran away, leaving Grandpap and the panther in the trail. Grandpap said he was afraid to run, so he confronted the vicious animal. He said it would growl with it's ears laid back like it was going to jump on him. When it growled, he would growl
back like it did. He would just look it in the eyes and growl. Finally it began to back away from him and growl. He would growl and back away too. At last the panther ran, and he ran too!"

(2) Carol, Vaughan Roots list, Item from the Vaughan Pioneer Book: "In his account of an interview on October 1923 with John Quincy Vaughan in Eugene, Oregon-an interview familiar to most Oregon Vaughans -- Fred Lockley described John Quincy as looking like a man who had stepped out of the age of the pack train and stage coach. He was heavy-set, broad-shouldered, and massively built. His beard was white, as was also his hair. He had on a broad-brimmed felt hat, and the look of wide spaces was in his eyes."

JOHN Q. VAUGHAN - "In 1863 John Q. Vaughan bought his present property which consists of one hundred and seventeen acres located in theneighborhood of Coburg, Lane County, and since that time he has been energetically engaged at its improvement and cultivation, eighty acres of whi ch are cultivated.
"He was born in Missouri, January 30, 1840, and came to Oregon in 1847 in company with his parents, who were seeking a home among the broader opportunities of the western states. He remained with his father until 1831, when he went to the mines in the hope of finding fortune which awaited the miner. He continued in the same mines for a year, and in 1861 he went to Idaho, still confident of his ability to succeed, and time justified the faith in himself, for after a winter spent in the neighborhood of Salmon river, during which he experienced hardships an dprivations which proved his courage, he returned to Oregon with $6,000 as the result of his persevering work. January, 1862 found him once more located on the home place, and there he remained until 1870, when he married and went to the farm which he had purchased seven years earlier.
"The wife of Mr.Vaughan was formerly Miss Flora Canterbury, and she died in 1895, the mother of four children, of whom Wilbur is located in Coburg; Oma it the wife of L. P Protzman; Euli a is the wife of A. C. Wheeler; Strahan St. Clair, who is engaged in agricultural pursuits with Mr. Vaughan. In political convictions Mr. Vaughan adheres to the principles advocated in th e platform of the Republican party, and fraternally affiliates with the independent Order of Odd Fellows.
