GEORGE SHERMAN'S GENEALOGY

HISTORY; The Sherman Family….as I know the story.
The earliest Sherman (in our line) that I have located is Elisha. To date, little information is available. He was born about 1765, probably in Virginia. I do not have a name for his wife and the only children found are Jesse (1782-1870) and Gordon (est. 1800-1840). Both Jesse and Gordon were born in Virginia, possibly Orange County. Gordon is my 2nd g-grandfather & your 3rd g-grandfather.

Elisha and Jesse ARE listed on the 1810 Orange County, Virginia Tax List Census. The 1810 Census was destroyed or lost but the Tax List is considered to be an accurate substitute for the upper district of Orange County.

Elisha Sherman: one white tithe
Jesse Sherman: one white tithe and one horse

1820 Census for Lawrence County, Ohio

Elisha and wife (unknown) are listed on the 1820 Windsor Twp., Lawrence County, Ohio census. Elisha would have been 55 years of age if my estimated 1765 birth estimate is accurate. Both Elisha and wife are listed as ages 45 and up. Elisha was a farmer.
(1820: Upper, Lawrence Co., Ohio, Page 101A; NARA Roll: M33_88; Image 169)

Also living in Windsor Twp.:

Jesse, age 16-26, 4 females under 10, 1 female 10-16 and 1 female 26-45.

Gordon, age 16-26, 1 female (wife) 16-26. (Our line – My g-grandfather/your 2nd g-grandfather.)

Both Jesse and Gordon were farmers.

On the 1830 census for Lawrence County, Elisha and wife are living in Perry Twp. Both are listed as ages 60-70 years. (1830: Perry Twp., page 312:NARA Roll: M19_134; Family History Film 0337945)

Also living in Perry Twp.:

Gordon, age 30-40, 3 males under 5, 2 females under 10 and 2 females ages 20- 30.

Living in Upper Twp.:

Jesse, age 40-50, 1 male 5-10, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 40-50.
.................
The 1840 census for Lawrence County shows Jesse living in Upper Twp.:

Jesse, age 50-60, 1 male 10-15, 1 female 20-30 and 1 female 50-60.
(1840: Upper, Lawrence Co., Ohio, Roll 407; page 31; Image 67. Family History Film: 0020170)

There is no record of Elisha or Gordon. It is my assumption that both died prior to 1840. No record of their wives has been found in Lawrence County records.
1850 Census for Upper Twp., Lawrence County, Ohio.

Jesse Sherman (son of Elisha) age 64 born in Virginia

age 22 born in Ohio
Matilda (wife of James) age 22 born in Ohio (*)
George W. age 02 born in Ohio
Elisabeth age 1/12 born in Ohio
(*)Other records list Matilda’s place of birth as Virginia.)
(1850: Upper, Lawrence Co., Ohio: Roll M432_701; page 471A)

Living in Elizabeth Twp.:

William Payton age 22 born in Kentucky
Mahala (dau. Of Gordon) age 22 born in Ohio (*)

(Elizabeth is my g-grandmother. She married James Sherman following the death of Matilda. The relationship of Elizabeth and William is unknown.)
Next door:

George W. age 12 born in Ohio
Elizabeth age 10 born in Ohio

RE; I have not located, yet, George W. on the 1870 Census. I had previously questioned the 1870 Kansas census that you forwarded but could not make a connection. The head of that household, Joseph Sherman, was born in 1825 Pennsylvania and I have not found any of our ancestors to be from any place other than Virginia.

The elder James Sherman disappears from records after the 1880 census. I assume that he died between 1882 and 1900…likely before 1890. (1880: Green, Worth, MO; Roll; 741, Family History Film: 1254741; page 429D; Enumeration District: 285; Image: 0175.)
