T. VAUGHAN; GHOST STORIES

Tom Vaughan

Thomas Vaughan and his two sons

Thomas E. Vaughan
.......................

Ghost Story:

Here is the Ghost Story http://www.care2.com/c2c/groups/disc.html?gpp=5255&pst=881584&archival= Hergest Court - Kington, UK February 05, 2007 6:19 AMHergest CourtKington, UKHergest Court is now a shadow of its former glory. It is a sad looking house of white walls and dark timbers that exudes a weary air of detached indifference. Yet for longer than anyone can remember it has held a reputation so sinister that, even today, there are people who will not walk past it during the hours of darkness has fallen fro fear of encountering the frightful entity that haunts it. Indeed so chilling is the legend of Hergest Court that it may well have provided the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes’s most famous adventure, The Hound of the Baskervilles.Towards the end of the 15th century Sir Thomas Vaughan resided at Hergest Court in the days when it was a much grander and more heavily fortified property than the farmhouse that greets visitors today. Vaughan was the very embodiment of the archetype wicked squire, and was known in the district simply as so ’Black Vaughan.’ During the Wars of the Roses he fought originally for the Lancastrians but switched his allegiance to the Yorkist cause and was killed at the Battle of Banbury in 1469. According to one version of events, he was decapitated, but no sooner had his head hit the ground than a fearsome howling echoed across the field of battle. Suddenly Vaughan’s faithful, black bloodhound bounded across the blood soaked ground, scooped up his master’s head and set off at full pelt for Hergest Court, with the gruesome relic jouncing in its jaws.

Thomas Vaughan’s headless cadaver was subsequently buried in the rather eerie family vault in Kington church. But his ghost remained at large taking the form of a black bull that rampaged about the district accompanied by a fearsome black hound. So terrified did the inhabitants become that they refused to leave their homes to the detriment of the town’s economy. It was therefore decided that an exorcism must be performed and twelve priests came together and summoned forth Black Vaughan’s evil spirit. It took a great deal of shouting, chanting and bible quoting, but eventually they reduced him to the size of a blow fly and confined him inside a snuff box which was then buried under a heavy stone slab on the bed of the lake at Hergest Court. The spirit of their wicked Lord may have been laid, but ridding the district of his fearsome bloodhound proved an impossible task and in the centuries that followed it came bounding onto the pages of local folklore to strike terror into the hearts and minds of all who crossed its path. It was especially feared by the Vaughan family to whom remained a harbinger of death until the immediate family became extinct in the 19th century.

But, according to a local tradition, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle viewed the Hound of the Vaughan’s as source of inspiration rather than fear, and he wove the legend of the black dog and the evil squire into a wonderfully evocative tale, and having transferred the action to the bleak desolation of Devon’s Dartmoor, pitted Sherlock Holmes against his most chilling and fearsome adversary The Hound of the Baskerville’s.

Anonymous notes: -- Thomas "Black Vaughan" Vaughan was the son of Sir Roger Vaughan (1385-1415) and Gwladys (GLADYS) Gam who founded Tretower. Thomas married Ellen Vaughan (her maiden name, probably a cousin). Thomas' son Watkin married Elizabeth BASKERVILLE (does that name sound familiar?), daughter of Sir John Baskerville. His effigy, along with his wife Ellen at his side, lie in St. Mary the Virgin Church in Kington, England. I have a picture of the tomb with their figures on top in Medieval fashion. Some say that Thomas wasn't really a bad guy, only that he had dark black hair and dark eyes and that was where the name "Black Vaughan" came from. His wife Ellen was a bit of a character -- she once dressed up as a man and went to an archery contest and shot and killed a man who had killed her brother. She then escaped in the confusion. Her nickname was Ellen GETHIN, which means "THE TERRIBLE". There is even some more data on the ghost exorcism -- apparently the ritual used had to have 12 candles, and a young mother carrying an infant in the procession. When they encountered Thomas' spirit, he blew out a candle every time they chanted the exorcism and so the final chant had to be read by a blind priest who had memorized all of scripture. It was only then, the legend goes, that the spirit would go into the snuff box. Of course this is all a bunch of silly stuff, as Hergest Court was lived in by his family for many years (actually centuries) following his death. The story about a black demonic dog is nothing new to European ears as it is a very old legend that still gets passed around today???

MARY FRANCIS HENDERSON, VAUGHANS

A page was copied about the settlers of Taney County. One was of Mary Francis Henderson, who married George Washington "Uncle Bud" Vaughan in Barry County, Missouri. She was said to have been born in the town of Roaring River, this no longer exists. Family stories say her mother (name never given) was 1/2 Cherokee and was on the Trail of Tears. As Barry County borders Taney one wonders if her mother might have been one of these Cherokee women. I think Mary's parents were Thomas Henderson and Nancy ____. Nancy would have been the 1/2 Cherokee woman. The 1850 census shows her being born in North Carolina. Thomas was shown as born in Tennessee. They lived in Searcy County, Arkansas in 1850, Tomahawk Township. In 1860 they lived in Stone County, Missouri, but suspecting, between these two censuses they lived in Barry County. B"Within My Ozark Valley". Has any one seen this bk.? William Vaughan, an adventurer from Wales (descendant of Thomas & Henry Vaughan) became a Indian trader. William Vaughan married a Cherokee maiden by the name of Fair-A- Bee-Lunah in the Cherokee Territory of Tennessee. Willian Vaughan and his son-in-law Philip Harp. They were in Eureka Springs, Ark. The great grandmother was Stone. Granny Molly Vaughan Stone, 1892. It speaks of the Civil War.
The Vaughans & Harps have left a string of such houses to blaze the trail which they open all the way from Tennessee into the Ozarks. The towns spoken of were Cassville,, Mo.. Springfield, Mo. (Dr. Benjamin Franklin Pickley), Ft. Smith (then called Belle Point) Boston Mountains, Eureka Springs, Carrol, Madison and Newton Co., Ark. The more agricultural- minded Vaughans remained in Washington Co., Ark., where Samuel Vaughan, son of William, was one of the three commissioners who chose the site of Fayetteville, Ark. and helped survey it. He named the town for his home town, Fayetteville, Tenn. One can undestand the different spelling of Vaughan or Vaughn. Harps vs Erps, Earps. This book was written by CORA PINKLEY CALL, 1956. Many question some of the correctness of issues in the book. So do check everything out by other sources. .................................
Subject: Samuel and Daniel Vaughan

They lived around the Hawkins and Hancock Counties area -- there wasn't a Hancock County when they left Hawkins sometime after 1812, but just where they lived is still being debated. Most feel it was somewhere else in Tennessee, and very likely it was Warren and White Counties, Tennessee. There are grants in both counties for a Samuel and Daniel Vaughan and some indication that their sister Mary and her husband lived there:

Daniel: In Warren County, Tennessee in 1812, on a tax list, appears the name Daniel Vaughan, along with a David Vaughan. He apparently received land in White County, Tennessee, Grant # 5585 as an assignee of John C. McLemore, 3 acres lying in White County in the third District of Cane Creek of main Caney Fork including the house and improvements formerly occupied by John Medkiff, on May 23, 1814. In Deed Book F., page 73, he sold to John Simmons, both of White County, for $215, the land mentioned in the grant, on September 18, 1815. He appeared on the White County tax lists for 1815 and 1816.

Samuel: In Warren County, Tennessee, Grant # 5670, State of Tennessee to Samuel Vaughn, assignee of Peter Turney, 20 acres lying Warren County in the third District on the waters of Rocky River, June 4, 1814. Is this our Samuel?? Mary: Taken from her NOTES section: RECORDS ON VAUGHAN CONNECTION: On a Evans family reunion a few years back, and someone who attended gave a copy of the records that were circulated that day, and sent it to me, and it shows the following data:

MARY VAUGHAN, daughter of WILLIAM VAUGHAN, born 1779, Virginia. MARY VAUGHAN married JAMES EVANS - September 14, 1802, Hawkins County,Tennessee (Mary stated she was married in the home of her father, WILLIAM VAUGHAN) Their first son, JESSE EVANS, was born in 1803, Hawkins County,Tennessee, and Jesse's fifth child FERIBY EVANS was born in 1840. James Evans was listed near William Vaughan, Sr., John Vaughan, and William Vaughan, Jr. on the 1812 Tax Lists of Hawkins County,Tennessee. All appeared on the list taken by Wm. Nichols.

After his discharge from the War of 1812, James and Mary (Vaughan) Evans moved to White County, Tennessee, with her parents, where in 1816, James Evans witnessed an Indenture for WILLIAM VAUGHAN. James Evans died on 28 July 1820, in Fentress County, Tennessee, and hiswidow MARY EVANS continued on the Census of White and Van Burencounties, Tennessee. The Evans' were back and forth between what are now Van Buren (formerly White) and Fentress counties, TN. Mary died inAugust of 1873, Fentress County, Tennessee.

"Remember that in 1880 Zimri Vaughan was on p. 521 and John Vaughan with Maborne & Lucinda in the household was on p. 522 - living in City of Granby. Notice Levisa named her daughter Lucinda - probably after her mother. I don't think the Grigsby family is related, but probably living in same house and sharing costs with Duff family....?? However unable to find the Duff family after this census. It's possible Edward died and Levisa remarried."

I think you might be able to get a death certificate for Ruth (Vaughan) Cooper from the State of Oklahoma. "Handy Book for Genealogists" says death certificates are available from 1908 and she was listed on the 1910 census in Washita Co, OK. You can write to the following address or possibly call the number to get an application form for the death certificate. It's been quite a while since I have ordered a death certificate, but it used to cost $8-$10 ? changed. (COPIES ARE CHEAPER) It would be exciting to learn the maiden name of Maborne's wife, Lucinda! She's probably related to one of the other lines we're researching....

WILLIAM PATRICK VAUGHAN letter

RE: East Kentuckian Library: Periodicals Sec. 900 Webster Street Fort Wayne Indiana 46802
Vaughan Family
Letter from James E. Vaughan, Lee Rice Farm Delapline, Arkansas 72425, 24 Aug 1971 correspondance.
WILLIAM PATRICk VAUGHAN AND FAIR-A-DEE-LUNA (INDIAN NAME)
Accounts of marriage to a "Welsh trader" William Patrick Vaughan to an Cherokee Princes known as Fair-a-Bee-Lunah (known now as Western North Carolina).
This is told by Henry P. Scalf of Stanville, Kentucky when he was an editor of the Floyd Co., Times at Prestensburg, Kentucky. The story is told in the scalf's pamphlet titled VOICES OF OLD MEN, reportedly the result of the testimony of older Vaughan descendants during court proceedings in the case of Nellie Burchett Hokiase versus other heirs to the estate of clarence Hokiashe, an Osage Indian. It was Mrs. Hokiashe's intent to prove that she was part Indian - as a result of Cherokee blood from the Burchett side of ther family via the Vaughans. She was able to prove this, as detailed in Scalf's story, and thus preserve her husband's estate for herself and her only child. Fro this accoun, it seems the William Parrick and his Cherokee wife had three children of record - Ayres T. Vaughan, William Vaughan and Molly Vaughan and "others." Ayres T. was buried in the Vaughan cemetery near Patrick Swirl Kentucky. The headmarker at his grave carries the dates 1742 - Feb. 18 1842. presumably the birth and death dates of Ayres T Vaughan the son of William Patrick and Fair-a-Bee-Lunah who sired the "Upper Big Sandy Clan of Vaughan.s"
According to court testimony (and the Hokiashe proceedings took place around 1942-45, we believe) the other son of record, William Vaughan accompanied his brother-in-law Phillip Hart, to Northwest Arkansas Territory "around the turn of the century." The daughter Molly was a small child at the time. now Northwest Arkansas." They were credited with naming the Boston Mountains, although it is not clear to me wheather this was son William or "Old William Patrick." Molly Vaughan was said to have married a STONE, and it is my further understanding that the late Conn Pinckley Call of Eureka Springs was related to the Vaughans via her Great Grandmother Molly. Other information is available in Scalf's pamphlet and in the writings of Mrs. Call; however, these are the essential facts that I have been able to glean from these writings, as they seem to pertain to this particular Vaughan's lineage..Continued inside on page 18"
