Sir Roger Vaughan 1400, Bredwardinve

(Brycheiniog)
THE FAMILY OF VAUGHAN
Gwladys, the second wife of Sir William ap Thomas (p.14), was the daughter of Dafydd apLlywelyn, known as Sir David Gam. She had previously been married to Sir Roger Vaughan of Bredwardine, Herefordshire, who fell at Agincourt, together with his father-in-law.

Of the three sons of this marriage, the eldest, Watkin Vaughan, inherited Bredwardine. The second, Thomas, was of Hergest; he took part, with his half-brother, The Earl of Pembroke, in the action at Edgecote Field (1469) and there fell at the head of his men, being aged about 60. His valor and strength and his fate are commemorated in an ode of Lewis Glyn Cothi (Y Dosparth 1. vi).
Roger Vaughan, the third son of Sir Roger and Gwladys, was an infant at the time of his father's death. His career was linked with that of his half brother William Herbert. Theophilus Jones states that there seems to have been particularly a warm attachment and affection between the half-brothers Vaughan and Herbert, the latter as he rose in favour at court, using his interest continually to increase the property of the elder born, and to procure him grants from the crown of lands in Breconshire and Glamorganshire.
These acquisitions are well illustrated by a grant of 1460, by which Sir Roger Vaughan obtained the offices of porter of Bronllys Castle, forester of Cantref Selyf, Penkelly and other lordships in the March of Wales. Tretower Court must have been a gift from William Herbert, who retained in his own hands the lordship and manor. Roger Vaughan's connection with Tretower seems first to be mentioned in 1457, when the name Roger ap Rhosser Vaughan of Tretower figures in a list of Welsh gentlemen to whom a pardon had been granted.
He married Cecily, the daughter of Thomas ap Philip Vaughan of Talgarth, by whom he had two sons, Thomas of Tretower and Watkin of Talgarth. Thomas had three sons, Roger, Watkin and Henry Vaughan. These descendants of Roger and Gwladys are commemorated in a number of poems by Lewis Glyn Cothi (YDosparth 1, xiii-xviii), who also sings of the glories of other branches of the family. In a poem addressed to Sir Roger Vaughan (YDosparth 1, viii), which must be dated late in 1469 or in the following year, the poet urges him to summon Welsh levies and march against the English to avenge the death of the Earl of Pembroke and of Roger's brother, Thomas Vaughan. This shews (that's the way show was spelled in book) that Roger was still alive in 1469. He must of died soon after, for in 1475 his son, .....
