Pg 2, NOTES: The Vaughan family in this part of the United States sprang from Samuel C., who emigrated from England to this country in colonial days, and was a lieutenant colonel in the Revolutionary War. His son was James Vaughan, born Feb. 28, 1802.
James and Sarah Vaughan: The former was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia. They were married in that state(Lunenburg Ct, Va) and lived there until the year 1837, when they came to Alabama and settled in Tallapoosa County on the Tallapoosa River. They lived there three years and owned a place one mile north of Dadeville, Alabama. Then they moved into town and lived there until James's death in 1880. By occupation he was a farmer and an energetic and thrifty man, accumulating a considerable property. He dealt in notes and securities and prospered in that line of business. He was a man of decided convictions and when he arrived at a conclusion on any subject was fearless in the expression of his opinions. He was opposed to secession but after the state had seceded he gave his assistance unstinted to the new government. He was by faith a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and a member of the Masonic fraternity. He reared a family of five sons and six daughters.

Notes for FREDERICK ARCHER VAUGHAN:
Lawyer, bank owner (in Dadeville Alabama),deputy US Marshall of the Northern District of Alabama. Came to Graysville, GA in 1886 with James Madison Coleman Vaughan, his wife Martha E. Spier amd their daughter Clyde L Vaughan, and a partner named "Wilas", a Jew to establish a lime burning and barrel mfg business to mfg and ship lime. Frederick lived above the mill dam at "The Cedars". The company he set up was known as the Graysville Mining and Manufacturing Company, and the Company Store was erected in 1886.
Sallie Vaughan's husband last name Harrison(a rustic country bumpkin), nagged her to walk to Dadeville and sit on the bank steps waiting for Fred A. Vaughan to come to open up. Shabbily dressed, greatly embarassing him to plead for her share of her grandfather's estate (James Madison Vaughan- Fred's brother). Eventually Fred, to get rid of Sallie, called her in, had her hold her apron while he poured 100 silver dollars in her lap. Where upon she signed a quit claim to any further claim. Fred (a devious lawyer banker) also managed to eucher and finagle Julia Vaughan, and the other sib James Madison Coleman Vaughan, out of their share of their grandfather's estate.
Continued pg 6
Fred gave Martha E. Spier a cow and a quit claim deed to 80 acres of badly eroded red clay land full of ditches, the homestead where her husband James Madison Coleman Vaughan was born. The couple Martha and James signed a release from all further claims on his grandfather's estate. From 1890 to 1913 the farm never produced more than $50 a year income, which money was sent to Martha by a man named "cousin' Percival Oliver in Dadeville who seemed to be some sort of executor. When JMC Vaughan died in 1913, Martha sold the farm at Dadeville for $100 cash. Actually the only legal deed she had was that 'cousin' Percival had paid the taxes on the farm for a period of 20 years becoming the owner by law. This in spite of Fred Vaughan's deed to her.
Limestone kilns burned down circa 1899, Fred left Graysville moving back to Dadeville
